Do You Have The Time?

A historic Lewes church is hoping that its Christmas Fair on Saturday 2nd December will be a money-maker as it raises funds for ongoing maintenance work to its ancient clock which was overhauled last year.

St Thomas a Becket at Cliffe boasts the second-oldest working clock in the county, and it needs constant professional attention to keep its time-worn mechanism in working order. Attributed to James Looker, a Ditchling blacksmith, the turret timepiece dates from 1671 and continues to strike the hours from the bottom of Cliffe High Street.

“A clock this old needs regular maintenance”, explains churchwarden Trevor Butler. “We are fortunate to be in the good hands of Thwaites and Reed of Rottingdean who ensure the rather worn mechanism continues, thanks in no small part to the daily winding by Brother George who ascends the tower steps to perform the task. Proceeds from the annual Cliffe Christmas Fair will support the clock fund for the next 12 months.”

The Fair is in Cliffe Hall on Saturday morning from 10am and features delicious home-made cakes, hot drinks, gifts and confectionery, a tombola, accessories stall, raffle and lots more for all the family to enjoy.
