Henfield Hall Welcomes Roy Lancaster Into The Garden Club
The Henfield Hall was full to brimming and the huge turn-out was justified – what a success his illustrated talk ‘My Life With Plants’ was. Roy Lancaster gave a very interesting and humorous two hour talk which was hugely enjoyed by all. His talk was accompanied by slides of his life as a gardener from a very early age until the present day.
Roy started with his early interest in plants as a schoolboy, described his early work years as a Parks Department employee in Bolton (his home town), his time as a television Garden Show co-presenter with Percy Thrower and later Geoff Hamilton. We were fascinated to hear about his overseas travels in search of plants, to places such China, Russia, New Zealand and Malaya. His passion and enthusiasm shone through every part of the Talk.
We were all impressed by his contribution to horticulture, borne out by the details of his time working at the Sir Harold Hiller Gardens in Hampshire and his commitment to encouraging young people with an interest in horticulture.
Roy said, “Gardeners are the happiest people – all you need is a packet of seeds and patience. The whole world can open up for you – whether it’s a pea or a tree”.
