‘Outstanding’ Downlands Open New Teaching Block
Downlands Community School is situated in the vibrant community of Hassocks, West Sussex in an idyllic location in the South Downs National Park.
Downlands is an Outstanding (Ofsted 2017), secondary school with 1100 student on roll. Ofsted describe Downlands as “a caring and inclusive environment which fulfils the school commitment ‘to place learning at the heart of everything we do.’ The outstanding outcomes which pupils consistently achieve are a result of this commitment. Students throughout the school are fully engaged in learning across the curriculum from art to physics, drama to mathematics.” Ofsted describe how “the academic curriculum is rigorous and challenging. It is enriched by provision for the arts and a strong programme of extracurricular activities which further enhance pupils’ social, moral, spiritual and cultural understanding.”
The building project to increase the school’s capacity began in October 2016. Amongst the new facilities are eight brand new classrooms, a dance studio and larger community café, an extended library and resource area, a new inclusion hub, new changing rooms, wider corridors, more effective circulation and more toilets, offices and storage space.
We are extremely grateful to the Duke of Gloucester for agreeing to open our new teaching block. The building has been named after our former Headteacher Rose Hetherton who retired in 2016. She led the school in an inspirational manner for 9 years and has been a huge support to the school in co-ordinating the project – even in retirement. The cost of the project is approximately £6 million and has been financed by West Sussex County Council. The Dance Studio, which will open in December, has also received funding from Sport England, the Downlands School Association and private donations.
