Real Deli Treats In Forest Row
Nick Shearer started Shearer’s Fine Foods 4 years ago and has built a reputation for great tasting food and drink. The cheese counter is an important part of the deli, but there is so much more, including a host of specialist recipe ingredients, fresh bread, chilled lines, frozen pastries and savouries, handmade desserts, chocolates and other treats, fine wines and food accessories. They also offer fresh, made to order deli sandwiches and tapas boxes to take away.
Nick’s view is that if you use quality, flavoursome ingredients then you don’t need to complicate meals to make them special. To demonstrate this, he gave me a quick masterclass on some of the 60 cheeses Shearer’s offers. First Nick gave me a taste of 4 different cheddars and talked to me about why they taste so different and how each might be used. Next, he showed me how pairing cheese with other ingredients enhances the overall flavour; the Manchego with Membrillo and Mayfield Swiss with basil pairings were quite extraordinary.
Away from the cheese counter one of the most popular departments is the Antipasti Bar which offers 9 varieties of olives and antipasti for customers to help themselves. I can heartily recommend the Spanish Gordal picante olives which are probably worth a visit to Shearer’s alone! Spanish products feature across all departments at Shearer’s, including cheeses, hams, chorizos, wines and the much sought after Rabitos, figs filled with a brandy mousse and covered in chocolate; fabulous!
But it’s not just Spanish, Nick has sourced products from many local producers as well as the rest of the UK and further afield in Europe. As an independent, Nick has been able to be responsive to customer suggestions which has proved to be very successful, especially in the run up to Christmas when his multinational customer base have some very specific requirements for their festive entertaining.
Christmas is obviously a busy time at Shearer’s and Nick has been preparing for some time. Hampers have become extremely popular due to the unrivalled product range, the flexibility to choose your own contents plus the box, pack and wrap free service that Shearer’s offers. Providing food for customers events peaks in the run up to Christmas too, with cheese boards, whole cheeses, cheese cakes, charcuterie platters, whole hams, canapés, sandwiches and handmade cakes and desserts being the most popular.
I departed Shearer’s with a freshly made deli sandwich, which was superb, and a head full of lots of information and recipe ideas. It is great to see a proper deli thriving and I personally will definitely return to pick up some gifts and order my Christmas cheese board.
