Age UK East Sussex Needs You!

Age UK East Sussex is looking for more volunteers, Rachel Kelly from the charity explains how the role often gives a sense of personal reward and comfort through helping others

Age UK East Sussex, a leading charity dedicated to supporting older people in the region, is calling on local residents to volunteer their time and skills to help make a positive impact to the lives of older people in the community. With a range of rewarding opportunities available, volunteers can make a significant difference while experiencing personal growth and fulfilment.

As the population of older adults in Sussex continues to grow, the demand for Age UK East Sussex’s services has never been higher. The charity provides vital support, including companionship, advice, and practical assistance, to ensure that older individuals live happy, healthy, and independent lives.

Norah, pictured above, who has been volunteering as a telephone befriender for the last 3 years, explained what she finds most rewarding about her work with Age UK East Sussex, and how volunteering has benefitted her. “I love doing this because I really have a heart for people who are lonely and sometimes with no one to talk to. This could impact on people’s mental well-being, therefore if that one phone call I make could change their lives and their mental well- being then that gives me satisfaction. A year ago I lost my beautiful daughter to ‘sudden death’. This affected me so much mentally and I found myself feeling lonely and vulnerable. However, through befriending and interacting with others, I’ve been helped so much and I would say it’s a win-win for me and those I speak to.”
